Some of you may remember that almost 2 years ago to the date I joined team A.J. Renner & Associates and shaved my head for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. At that time I wrote how I was enjoying a few beverages with my sister (Sheila) and her husband (Patrick) who works for A.J. Renner, and before I knew what had happened a legally binding contract was crafted on a cocktail napkin. Well this time I can't say that I'm doing it due to too many cocktails... although I will admit that I still enjoy hoisting a few pints! Unfortunately, this time I'm shaving my head because my niece Alicia Sheridan was diagnosed with cancer last year, and since we all feel helpless when someone is sick, my dad (Ed/Patty he goes by 2 names), brothers (Mike & Brian), nephews (Patrick & Johnny), and the only truly brave brother in-law that I have (Patrick... Glenn chickened out!) are all getting our heads shaved as a sign of support!
Alicia is 16 and was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma in early 2007. Alicia has completed six rounds of chemo and thirty rounds of radiation. Beginning on February 20, she will be hospitalized for at least a month for high dose chemo and bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately, Alicia's battle with cancer is far from over but she's got an incredible determination and spirit and we pray that she beats this terrible disease. Last year the St. Baldrick's Foundation raised $12.8MM for children's cancer research, and the primary beneficiary was the Children's Oncology Group the world's leading childhood cancer research network. On November 19, 2007 Alicia along with her two younger brothers Patrick & Johnny (who were brave enough to shave their heads... Glenn?), presented a $200,000 grant to a ground-breaking partnership of the combined pediatric oncology teams at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Rush Medical Center and Stroger Hospital.
As I said 2 years ago... someone with cancer has touched us all, whether it is a child or an adult, and I'm more than happy to go bald if it helps to find a cure for childhood cancer. At that time I also said that you could call me Kojak, Doctor Evil, Minnie Me, Mr. Clean, etc... and one of my good friends sent back the following additional names - Seanaid O'Connor, un-employed, stupid bald {blocked}er, the devil, boyfriend in cell 136, not allowed in, and Mr. Philadelphia... it's good to have such creative friends!
All kidding aside - I look forward to having my hair chopped off, and I ask that you help make my hair loss worth the effort by making your own effort and donate to this wonderful cause!
