Year 12:
Why am I shaving my head, and why should you care?
Honestly, because f*ck cancer. It’s had its gnarled fingers in many places in my life, both personal and professional. Thank you modern medicine my mom is cancer free, as are a number of my patients, but we still have so far to go.
For those of us who speak numbers, 1 in 5 kids diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. won't survive. For those who do, more than 96% have severe or life-threatening conditions by the time they are 50.
And that’s where we come in.
This year especially, we have to be thoughtful of where we put our emotional energy, and this in one place I know I want to spend mine. I am so concerned with the current administration’s lack of forethought/ reckless abandon with firings and budget cuts, that I know will have wide ranging effects. Including funding and support for research, in this case, cancer research. One positive step I can make: I know that each shaved head, every dollar donated, creates a cascade of progress for kids with cancer.
Your gift will give kids and their families hope, supporting the best research across the country, through the largest charity funder of childhood cancer research grants, the St. Baldrick's Foundation.
Together, let's give these kids the lifetime they deserve. Thank you for your support this year and every year.
Surprise prize for reading all the way to the end:
If I get to $1k by this weekend (Saturday or Sunday) I’ll do a Mohawk for the whole week preceding shave day! I’m even willing to dye it if that sweetens the pot!
Love you all
