I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research with: Team Daniel

In the midst of the holiday season in 2020, our lives took an unexpected turn when my son, Daniel, then just 12 years old, was diagnosed with an exceptionally rare mature teratoma/germ cell brain tumor. This type of tumor, located in only 20-30 people worldwide, sent shockwaves through our world.

Daniel's journey was marked by 6 challenging chemotherapy sessions, 3 extensive 14-hour brain surgeries, and an additional array of medical interventions, including 6 weeks of brain and spinal radiation. Renown Children's Hospital made the crucial decision to airlift him to Oakland, where he would receive specialized care under the expertise of Dr. Sun at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.

After 2 chemotherapy treatments in Reno, a heartbreaking revelation emerged – the tumor had doubled in size. February 2021 saw us back at UCSF Oakland, witnessing Daniel undergo a series of surgeries. Post-surgery, he faced a daunting recovery period, struggling with basic functions like talking, walking, eating, and even using the bathroom. Countless hours of physical, occupational, and speech therapy became a part of his daily routine.

Our joy of bringing Daniel home in June was tempered by the knowledge that we'd soon embark on another chapter of his treatment journey. Six weeks of radiation treatments at UCSF Mission Bay San Francisco followed, extending our family's endurance and resilience.

Even four years later, the impact lingers. Regular MRIs, corrective eye surgeries, a permanent brain shunt and ongoing considerations about puberty and potential fertility challenges fill our lives. Daniel dreams of having children someday, and we hold on to that hope.

We remain deeply thankful to God for our son's outcome, feeling blessed beyond measure. Supporting organizations like St. Baldrick's and Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation, who tirelessly work towards advancing research, is our way of ensuring that no family faces the heartache we endured. If our story can contribute to saving even one child, it's a cause worth championing.

To Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation, your unwavering support means the world to families navigating this challenging journey. Thank you for being a beacon of hope and comfort when it's needed most.
