I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

In 2010, I wanted to shave my head with my mother who was suddenly diagnosed with breast cancer. My mom lost her hair from chemo faster than expected, and I was unable to make the four-hour drive in time to shave with her. While searching “women with shaved heads” online, I stumbled upon the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and fell in love with their mission. A second-year head track and field coach, I pitched the idea for my team to host a head-shaving event to benefit pediatric cancer research, and the Emmaus Shave for the Brave was born.

The first Shave for the Brave surpassed the initial $10,000 goal outside on the brand-new track on a chilly but sunny day, excitingly raising $24,567! The original intention was to host a Shave every two years, but a cancer-free honoree, David, relapsed just months after the inaugural event. Not wanting him to miss the next Shave, the second event was scheduled for March 2011. Sadly, David died the month beforehand, and the reason for our fundraiser became personal. EHS students were motivated to save kids like David, who touched everyone’s lives, and we raised an unbelievable $39,921… Since the start, the Emmaus Shave for the Brave has gained momentum from a supportive community, surpassing every expectation and making lasting impressions on everyone involved! Let's make 2022 the biggest event yet! Thank you for being a hero for kids with cancer!

This will be the fifth time I've shaved my head at our event, and I'd greatly appreciate your donation! And if you're on the fence of becoming a shavee, do it! I promise that it'll be the best haircut of your life! :) Thank you for being a hero for kids with cancer!
