I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I'm shaving my head with St. Baldrick's to raise money and help conquer kids' cancers! Every 2 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide, and 1 in 5 of those in the U.S. will not survive. I refuse to accept this reality, so I’ve decided to fundraise for lifesaving research to find cures and better treatments for kids.

My son, Alex an Honored Kid and survivor, is doing quite well. He is a freshman who did well his first semester. He lives on campus but we visit several times a week to give him growth hormone injections. This weekend will be the last of his injections. His MRIs are now every four months instead of three and he’ll remain on some other hormone therapies for the rest of his life.

In previous years I mentioned our personal experience with Alex’s cancer treatment and how pediatric cancer is often a lifelong battle after treatment has ended. This year I want to mention how non-discriminatory cancer is. Alex was in treatment alongside fellow patients of many cultural, racial and economic backgrounds. Cancer is an equal opportunity destroyer. I saw kids with cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, Autism/Asperger's..., I saw a young couple with their 3-month old and imagined how excited they most have been six months prior eagerly awaiting their child’s birth. And, I saw my own son suffer through cancer treatment.

Whatever you think about the current US President, the STAR Act made it into the State of the Union Address thanks to the efforts of St. Baldrick’s and its partners. There will be more funding for pediatric cancer research. Not just for improved detection and treatment, but also to address the post-treatment effects that most pediatric cancer patients experience. We’re gaining momentum.

Now we need your support! Your donation can fund research to help kids survive and thrive. Join me today and let’s #DFYchildhoodCancers together.

Thank you,

The Butler Family
