I'm shaving my head with St. Baldrick's to raise money and help conquer kids' cancers! Every 2 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide, and 1 in 5 of those in the U.S. will not survive. I refuse to accept this reality, so I’ve decided to fundraise for lifesaving research to find cures and better treatments for kids.
When I looked at the date for the event I was like...oh no, that's 2 weeks before our girls trip. I don't wanna be bald in Vegas. But, kids with cancer go bald everyday and it's never convenient for them. So, I'm doing it anyways.
There are several reasons I'm participating:
1. It's 2020. How is this even still a thing?! We should be beyond this. Kids shouldn't be dying of cancer.
2. My friend Jess is a total bad ass pediatric oncology nurse and she has done it for the kids she works with, and I'm SO impressed by her. I just want to support her, and people like her and help these amazing kids in any way I can.
3. I'm sick of people feeling like their beauty is defined by their hair. These kids are no less beautiful or precious because they have no hair. Too many times I have heard Preslyn say she is not as beautiful as her cousin because her hair isn't long, or because she doesn't have rapunzel hair. Sure you can rock an awesome hairstyle, or hair that flows into your butt crack...but your hair doesn't MAKE you beautiful. Who you are and what you do make you beautiful!
4. When I was in my early 20's I had alopecia areata. I lost quarter size spots of hair all over my head and doctors told me they didn't know if it would ever come back. They don't know if it will happen again. It came on suddenly and I didn't know what caused it and it SUCKED. I was terrified. The idea of being bald felt so scary...just something being taken from you against your will and something EVERYONE can see. I was fortunate, it did come back and hasn't happened again since. That fear I felt was only a fraction of what these kids go through. And honestly, I feel like I just have to do it.
Now I need your support! Your donation can fund research to help kids survive and thrive. Join me today and let’s #DFYchildhoodCancers together.
