This photo is of me and our lovely daughter Haley. Her and kids like her who have cancer, are why we do St Baldrick's every year. In this before photo, she has had her hair and makeup done and is dressed in a beautiful gold prom dress from the Bella Project. Although she is only 10, she has been given special permission to attend this incredible prom at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children, because this is her last chance. She will never grow up to be a teenager and in this photo she had entered her end of life care with Hospice Hawai'i, today known as Navian Hawai'i; to whom we are forever grateful. She chose her prom date... her dad. Dressed in a suit, Patrick escorted her to her prom, finishing with a special father and daughter dance that had the whole room in tears. This night was one of the most special, happiest and saddest nights of our lives. And this is only one day in the life of a family who has with a child with cancer.
I think of this day often and especially this year as her friends are ready now to graduate and proms are being postponed and cancelled. How lucky we were to have these opportunities; how sad that we could not have her here today, planning other celebrations with her friends for when it will be safe to hug in the world again.
Please help us. Please give as much as you can to St Baldrick's to fund childhood cancer research. For many families, including ours that day, it is the only chance we have. Mahalo everyone. We couldn't do this without you.
Every 2 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide, and 1 in 5 of those in the U.S. will not survive.
