This is my second year participating in St. Baldrick's. I loved being a part of it last year, but this year, it means even more. This year I am heading up a team of HUC students to be able to participate in the larger event called 36 Rabbis Shave for the Brave, happening at the Central Conference of American Rabbis' Convention in Chicago. This idea was started by a family friend of mine, Phyllis Sommer, as a mother of a child who has cancer and has had to tell him that he will die. Phyllis and Michael Sommer, both Rabbis, whom I know from OSRUI, have been great resources for me as a Rabbinical student. I have been following their scary journey and supporting childhood cancer awareness as much as I can. This is another way I can help. Last year I raised almost $700. I would like to raise at least $1000 this year in honor of Superman Sam!
There are many people whom I recognized last year and in my participation in Relay for Life. While I could add those peoples' names, I want to focus on Sam Sommer this year.
****Update: Samuel Asher Sommer passed away on December 14th, 2013 at the age of 8 after battling AML for a year and a half. My participation is in honor of his courageousness and in his memory, which will live on in all our hearts.***
I may not be shaving my head with the #36Rabbis in March, but I will be shaving it in late August or early September. I am doing this for Superman Sam Sommer and all other children and families who have childhood cancer invade their lives. As our Torah says, וְאִישׁ, כִּי יִמָּרֵט רֹאשׁוֹ--קֵרֵחַ הוּא, טָהוֹר הוּא" "If a man's hair falls off his head, he is bald -- yet he is pure" (Leviticus 13:40). I will be pure and show my support by being bald.
I've answered the call to be a hero! I'm raising money to stand in solidarity with kids fighting cancer, but more importantly, to find cures.
Please support me with a donation to the St. Baldrick's Foundation. This volunteer-driven charity funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.Your gift will give hope to infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers. So when I ask for your support, I'm really asking you to support these kids. Thank you!
