I have volunteered with the SMILE (Students Making Illness a Little Easier) program at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, KY since August 2012. I’ve spent many hours playing with the children in the oncology unit at the hospital. These kids have absolutely surprised and often overwhelmed me with their energy and enthusiasm for life, despite having been diagnosed with such a terrible disease. These kids, simply, love life and do not take anything for granted. They have often been my encouragement and motivation when I felt like my classes and exams were too much too handle. I thought of them and their bravery and knew that I could do this. If they could look cancer (something much scarier than silly exams) in the face and fight with all they had, I knew that I could too.
It is for these kids that I have decided to join so many others in the fight against pediatric cancer and shave my head for St. Baldrick's. On February 6th, 2013, I, Kelsey Field, will be shaving my head as a statement of solidarity for the brave and amazing children across our nation and in my own city who stand up to cancer every day. It will be hard, but when I think of these children who didn’t have a choice, who lost their hair to the treatments they needed to live, it won’t be a difficult decision—it will be the right decision.
Please support me with a donation to the St. Baldrick's Foundation. This volunteer-driven charity funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.
Your gift will give hope to infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers. So when I ask for your support, I'm really asking you to support these kids. Thank you!
