I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research with: JACKSONVILLE ASSOCIATION OF FIRE FIGHTERS

Hello, My name is John Usry and I am a firefighter/paramedic in Jacksonville, Florida. I am also a childhood cancer survivor. I am collecting money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation and on September 10, 2011 I will be shaving my head in solidarity with the children who are still battling this disease. When I was 13 I was diagnosed with leukemia (A.L.L.). I quickly went into remission and completed 3 years of pretty uneventful chemotherapy treatments. Approximately 1 1/2 years after completing chemotherapy treatments I relapsed and went back on chemo treatments while we looked for a donor for a bone marrow transplant. The search was short, my youngest sister was an exact match. After extensive testing I had a bone marrow transplant at Shands Gainesville on June 1, 1990, 4 days before my 18th birthday. As you can see, I have taken advantage of the 2nd chance given to me. Among other things I did become a firefighter, I have been married 6 years, my daughter is almost 1. I am also completing my B.S. Degree at Flagler College. So you can understand why the St. Baldrick's cause is important to me. I was given a 2nd chance on life and with continued research to find a cure for childhood cancer many other children will also have the opportunity for that 2nd chance.
