My daughter, Emma, was diagnosed with bilateral Wilms Tumor on November 28, 2008. She endured 37 weeks of Chemothereapy at the University of Virginia and Bilateral Partial Nephrectomy and radiation at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. She is now in remission and my family is looking forward to the day that we can say she is cured.
With all the Chemo she had she did loose all of her hair. It never seemed to bother her much. I decided to have a race with her to see who could grow hair faster. I shaved my head on October 24, 2009, which was about the same time Emma's hair started to grow back. The deal was that we would both grow our hair for two years (that would be October 24, 2011) and see who had more in the end.
About 6 months later one of my co-workers, Carrie, told me that she was shaving her head for St. Baldrick's. She told me all about the organization and asked if she could honor Emma. Myself, my wife and my daughters were there for the big event. We had a great time and watched many UVA students and others shave their heads at the event.
As my hair continued to grow and summer came it started getting awfully hot. As well, none of my beloved baseball hats would fit because my head was growing large from all the hair. I decided I was not going to make the two year mark. So what better event to end the race and shave my shaggy grey lock but St. Baldrick's.
It is not so obvious from my before picture but I am loosing the great hair growing race. I only hope that I can raise some money for a cause that is close to my families heart. It gives me hope that someday no child will have to take the journey that Emma did and no parent will have to endure the pain of seeing their child fight this awful disease.
Thank you for visiting my site and donating to such a worthy cause.
