So...the photo above is a bit of false advertising, but I have joined my nephew Bryce's St. Baldrick's team again this year. On March 11th, I will be shaving my head to raise awareness of - and money for - childhood cancer research. These days, me shaving my head is not a big deal (although the beard will come off as well), but funding for childhood cancer is a big deal.
Please take a moment to make a donation today. I'll take the $4 you were going to spend at Starbucks, or the $20 you found in the laundry, but for those who can do more, please do.
For those who share an affinity for economics, this is one area where the market - and the government - need a nudge. Current estimates are that the National Cancer Institute (part of NIH) spends only 4% of cancer research funding on children's cancers, so there is a gap to fill. At the same time, pharmaceutical investment is limited. Even though cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 15 in the United States, the larger adult cancer market captures almost all investment dollars. There is certainly some positive impact on childhood cancer treatments from the investment in adult cancer research, but it is limited.
