Hi everyone! I am excited to have my head shaved in support of kids fighting cancer - specifically, to raise money to find cures.
When I was in elementary school, my friend Michael Carlisle bravely battled a rare form of childhood cancer. Michael began his cancer battle prior to realizing a life without lab work, PET scans, chemo and hospitals. He was diagnosed at the age when he should have been learning to walk and run, yet he didn’t remember life without illness. In first grade, he questioned others in our class as to what their white counts were. He thought everyone shared the same struggles he did. Cancer was his normal and he never complained. Sadly, he lost his battle just before his seventh birthday.
Although we were young, I remember the hospital visits, missed school, and lack of normalcy that Michael experienced: but what I remember most is how courageously Michael faced every treatment, and how to him, losing his hair for treatments was no big deal. That's why shaving my head for this event - no matter how odd my large, funny-shaped empty head will look - is no big deal. I'm shaving my head in memory of kids like Michael and in honor of kids like Owen (see below!) who are fighting the battles - because interrupting the most precious time of a life with something horrible like cancer is a big deal that needs to be cured.
Please support me with a donation to the St. Baldrick's Foundation. This volunteer-driven charity funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.
Your gift will give hope to infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers. So when I ask for your support, I'm really asking you to support these kids - and honor those you know that have been touched by cancer. Thank you!
