I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

“Checkmate Cancer!” is the theme of the Roanoke Valley Chess Club as it meets at the Sport Clips Haircuts of Roanoke barbershop to shave their heads on St. Baldrick’s Day to raise funds for childhood cancer research. This will be at the Sport Clips Haircuts of Roanoke at the Hunting Hills Plaza on St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17, 2017.  Members from the Roanoke Valley Chess Club will shave their heads to “be one with the bald children” and to show our support for killing cancer that kills children by raising funds. We are looking for more women and men to join with us in this virtuous effort. The Roanoke Valley Chess Club was founded in 1947, and is the oldest operating chess club in Virginia, and is affiliated with the US Chess Federation. For over 60 years, the Roanoke Valley Chess club has served to bring and sustain chess activities to the region, and holds regular events. These events include United States Chess Federation Grand Prix tournaments. The club also holds volunteer annual outreach events during Roanoke's Festival in the Park, Grandin Court Block Party, and more.Sport Clips is managed by DeAnna Munsey and owned by Fred and Ena Carol Selby, and will support St. Baldrick’s by offering a dollar from each haircut on that day to St. Baldrick’s, and will offer free refreshments to her customers on the 17th.
