I am shaving my head in honor of my youngest grandson Brennan.
Brennan was diagnosed with high-risk B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in April 2016, at age 3. My daughter, son-in-law and Brennan moved from Bermuda to Boston to receive care at Boston Children's Hospital. They lived in Boston for 256 days, during Brennan's most aggressive chemotherapy treatments.
Brennan and his family have returned home and the chemotherapy continues. Brennan will finish his treatment in June 2018. He will then start 1st grade in the fall.
1 of 5 kids diagnosed in the US and Canada will not survive. Of those that do survive, 2 out of 3 kids will have long term side effects from the treatment. It doesn’t have to be this way and we can come together to change the statistics and the lives of children.
This is why I am shaving my head to support the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s mission is to conquer childhood cancer through research and support the discovery of less painful and more effective treatments.
Science is working to change childhood cancer forever;
• Smart medicine targeting only the cancer without poisoning the rest of the body
• Personalized treatments tailored to specific genetic composition
• Early detection and hopefully prevention
This progress is only possible by funding research. Shockingly, only 4% of national cancer funding is dedicated to childhood cancer research, so St. Baldrick’s mission is to fill the funding gap. Think of the great things that children want to be when they grow up… isn’t that worth more than 4%?
Let’s make 2018 the biggest year yet and let’s come together conquer childhood cancer in honor of Brennan and all the kid’s that fight cancer.
I will ShAVE.
