On March 8, 2023, Roy Clark Dague II finished his race and entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 91. He passed away peacefully in his sleep in a home filled with family. Roy was born on December 7, 1931, to Roy Clark Dague and Mildred Marian (Baker) Dague. Born and raised in Sylvania, Ohio, Roy graduated from Burnham High School in 1950 where he participated in the Projection Club, Band, Choir, and Theater productions. Inspired by a high school chemistry teacher to pursue a career in pharmacy, Roy, through hard work and determination, achieved his goal of graduating from the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and became a Registered Pharmacist in 1954. Shortly afterwards, Roy was drafted into the military and served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 stationed in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he worked as a trained medic on the base during the day and at a local pharmacy in the evening. He had fond memories of 1700 mile road trips back and forth to Sylvania during those years in his 1955 hard top Chevrolet.

Roy lived in Salt Lake City for a year after his time in the service and then returned to Sylvania where he began working at Lindau Rexall Drug in downtown Sylvania in 1958 where he worked faithfully until the store closed in 1997. He continued to work as a pharmacist for several more years before retiring. In 2004, Roy was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy for the completion of half a century or more in the profession of pharmacy. He enjoyed working on his continuing education and kept his pharmacy license well past retirement. Roy enjoyed many hobbies and adventures in his young bachelor days and throughout his life. In 1961, Roy qualified as a private pilot for single engine aircraft. In addition to flying to exotic locations such as the Bahamas, he loved viewing his local world from the sky. He liked to snow ski and take trips to the lake to water ski with friends. He enjoyed sailing with his sister and her family and had a life-long love of the ocean coasts and light houses. He enjoyed trips out west to the mountains and road trips anywhere near and far. He loved model trains and remote-control model airplanes and travelling on real trains and big airplanes. He held a Ham Radio license from high school until the end of his life. He was proficient in Morse code and collected post cards from amateur radio operators around the globe. His Ham call sign of W8DBY was a familiar sight on the license plates of all the cars he ever owned and loved. In the 1970s and 80s, he could be heard on CB Radio as well, known by his handle of Medicine Man. He always liked to have a dog and they were great companions for him throughout his life.

Roy was a great lover of local restaurants! He was well known in Sylvania and enjoyed seeing hometown friends and acquaintances wherever he went, with “The Office” group at Café Donuts being an especially special group of friends for many years.

Roy’s Christian faith was important to him and a source of great comfort and hope. He was active in church and enjoyed Christian fellowship and church attendance to the very end of his life. Roy was married to Diana Double from 1966 to 1978. Together, they welcomed daughters Sara and Emme into the world. Roy was a devoted father - a beloved, gentle, and kind Dad and Grandpa with a great sense of humor. His daughters and grandchildren were always blessed by his prayers and presence in their lives whether they were near or far. In 2018, Roy experienced a health crisis and was no longer able to live independently in his beloved historic “Dague House” on Erie Street across from the park in Sylvania. He spent his last five years living with one of his daughters in Minnesota - enjoying the love and care of family, but missing his good friends and hometown greatly.

Roy is survived by his daughters Sara (Kevin) Shull and Emme (Chad) Amble and 15 grandchildren, as well as by his best and wonderful friend Rosemary Sass. He was preceded in death by his parents and older sister Mildred “Midge” Cook, and another sister Marian who died at birth.

Family and friends will gather for a visitation at Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main Street, Sylvania, Ohio, on Saturday, March 18th, from 10:00 AM until the funeral ceremony begins at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Don Fothergill presiding. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park, 6382 Monroe Street, Sylvania, Ohio.
