In Memory of Dimitrios Kanakis

North Haven, CT, US

Captain Jimmy, husband, father, grandfather. Dimitrios or Jimmy as his friends called him, was born on Andros, Greece, December 1, 1944 and passed away on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 in Bridgeport Hospital with friends and family by his side. His wife Sofia and his son Nektarios held his hands while playing Greek music until he passed away. He lived 76 and a half-full long years telling stories of his young days traveling the world on cargo ships until he met the love of his life Sofia. Married for 51 years, together they had a career in restaurants, and they shared their love of fishing on their boat. The memories they made will be cherished and remembered by all. Greeks love to party and entertain. Who hasn't had dinner and drinks with them? The times spent with his best buddies making moonshine, wine, and sausage. There was never a dull moment. We all laughed and ate and drank, discussing who made the better wine and who caught the biggest fish. These memories are what keep us going. The car rides with his son Nektarios to lunch or trips to Home Depot and the coffee talks with his daughter-in-law Nomiki. The biggest joys of his life were his three grandchildren. Sofia who loved to make coffee for her Papou, Petrina who loved to dance and sing for him and Dimitri who loved to help Papou do projects around the house. They made his life complete. He was proud to live long enough to see his son get married and even prouder to be a Papou. We will miss him and his stories. We will miss his smile and his laughter. We will live our lives knowing he is in a peaceful place. Kalo Paradiso Baba, until we meet again.
