Sarah was diagnosed with Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma in October 2007. She has undergone 12 rounds of chemotherapy, numerous surgeries, and 20 rounds of radiation. Sarah is the strongest child I will ever know. I don't think I could have taken what I watched her go through. In order to remove the tumor, Sarah had a resection of her left leg which included the removal of the fibula bone and much of the muscle. Tendons were cut and an artery was removed. Despite this, Sarah has overcome the surgery and with the help of physical therapy, she walks and runs. Sarah is now in First Grade. Her hair has grown back and she is enjoying life. Sarah is in physical therapy and still has to go to Sloan-Kettering periodically for blood work and for a Bone Scan, MRI, PET Scan, and CT Scan. Needless to say our lives will never be the same, and we pray every day that she remains cancer free. So many parents with whom we have become close with have lost their children to cancer, and thanks to organizations like St. Baldricks, we can hope and pray that one day, there will be a better way to rid this horrible disease.
