Philip is 7 years old. He lives with his Dad (Phil), Grammy (Jean) and Grampy (Bob). They have 2 dogs that he loves to play with, Kara and Minnie. Philip also enjoys getting to spend time with his Grandpa (Phil Sr.), Goo (Debbie), Auntie Doreen, Uncle Dennis and Auntie Vickie and his cousins.
He loves to play video games and watch cartoons. Right now his favorite video game is Rampage and Mario games. Philip is in first grade and loves school, spending time with his friends, watching sports with Dad and Grampy, and going to swimming lessons.
This past fall on November 20, 2012 he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Due to his age and the stage at which this disease was at he stayed in the hospital until just before Christmas. He is going through Chemotherapy weekly and has been a trooper through all the needles and tests and pills he is now required to take. For a kid that has never had a major illness and limited understanding of what is going on he has been handling this all extremely well and has been in very good spirits.
The hardest part for Philip is the isolation. With the treatment he is undergoing, his immune system is very delicate and even the simplest of colds can send Philip back into the hospital. So he is being tutored at home to try and keep up with his school work. He can’t spend time with his friends or cousins because kids carry germs and he can’t go to stores or restaurants either for the same reason. There’s too much risk of him being exposed to germs while he’s going through treatment.
Right now he is battling an infection that was discovered after his last dose of chemo. He has had to spend time in the hospital again and will remain there until the doctors can figure out what is causing his infection. This recent admission was the second since his outpatient treatment began in December. Philip is remaining upbeat and enjoying his visits to the play room and seeing the Music Lady at the hospital. He understands why he is not able to see his friends and he is very accepting of it, but he is also very anxious for the day when he can just “be Philip” again. What he really wants is to be home and to be able to go to school and see his friends again.
