In May of 2021 I suffered from an intussusception that required emergency surgery to remove part of my colon and small intestine. At that time, my operating doctor found a large mass that turned out to be Burkitt's Lymphoma, an aggressive type of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I was lucky to have found the tumors while still in stage 3, because that meant I didn't need as many rounds of chemo as we first thought! Over the next four months I spent close to 80 days in the hospital receiving 5 rounds of intensive chemotherapy and treatment for resulting illnesses. I had 4 surgeries, bone marrow biopsies, multiple hospitalizations for neutropenia and mucositis, 10 lumbar punctures, blood transfusions, and even a tooth pulled! I was thrilled to be able to ring the bell when my PET/CT scans showed no evidence of cancer this past September! Besides my awesome Doctors and Nurses at Lurie's, I am thankful to have benefitted from the most recent form of chemotherapy that research found to help kids like me.
