June 4th, 2018 was a typical day for us as a family. Iris's dad went to work and Iris, her brother Ollie, and myself (her mom) enjoyed the summer day visiting with friends. We never expected to be downtown Chicago that night waiting for her to get out of her first of many surgeries due to a mass on her brain found at our local E.R that afternoon.
Iris was diagnosed with a WHO grade 1 Pilocytic Astrocytoma brain tumor. Although the pathology diagnosed this tumor as benign, due to the location of the tumor, a full resection was not possible and she has been in treatment since.
Weekly hospital visits have become our new normal. Iris has experienced lengthy hospital stays and 7 surgeries total since her diagnosis. Lots of ups and downs with treatment which is currently under revision.
Through it all, Iris has remained positive, strong & loving. Making friends with everyone she meets. Whether its having dance parties in the halls or on stage with her fellow "Tube-i-corns", Iris always finds a reason to celebrate life.
We are proud of her and look forward to seeing her brave the shave herself at her schools 1st st.baldricks event this year!
