My name is Kannon, I’m 4 years old and I am becoming a super hero…On November 30, 2017, just two days before my 3rd birthday, I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). I spent my 3rd birthday in the hospital getting spinal taps, bone marrow biopsies and my port placed in preparation to start chemotherapy. My parents said that I was going to receive special medicine that would make me become a real super hero! After a week in the hospital receiving the initial rounds of my super hero medicine (chemotherapy), blood and platelets, I was able to go home to spend Christmas with my family. Over the next month I had received overwhelming support from friends, family and the fire department my parents worked for. Santa even came to personally visit me and my sister with a little help from the fire department bringing him in on a fire engine. It was one of the best days of my life. On January 2, 2018, just 30 days after starting my treatment, the doctors said my Leukemia was in remission!!! I was “kicking cancer’s tooshie!” I still would have to come to the hospital a lot to receive more super hero medicine over the next eight months but my body was responding “beautifully.” Over those eight months, I spent a lot of time getting medicine, blood draws, blood transfusions, platelet transfusions and even had to do sleepovers (hospital stays) at the hospital to get extra special super hero medicine. There were days that I didn’t want to go but my parents said that I was a trooper! In August of 2017, I officially transferred into “maintenance therapy.” This meant no more intense chemotherapy treatments and multiple trips to the hospital in a week. I only have to go to the hospital once a month for treatment and a check up. I also take most of my superhero medicine at home everyday. I will do this treatment until April 2021. Then I will officially become a REAL SUPER HERO!My parents tell me that I have done extremely well during this fight. I have been blessed by God that I didn’t suffer any major complications and that I have had no unplanned hospitalizations due to illness or infections to this day. They expected me to be extremely sick all of the time and yet I have done the exact opposite. I want to play all of the time and rarely do I feel icky. They say I have taught them to live in the moment and to be thankful for all of the blessings we have received. I would not be doing as well as I am today if it weren’t for all the prayers, support and advances in medicine. I am being treated at Children’s Hospital Colorado and my amazing doctors tell me I have a 90-95% success rate of being cured of my cancer. My family and I want that number to become 100% not just for ALL, but for all pediatric cancers!
