My Story
Raegan Alexandra Matthews is a 10 year old little girl who is fighting Cancer. When Raegan was 3 years old she suddenly fell ill and was diagnosed with Anaplastic Ependymoma (Brain Cancer grade 3). She was treated at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, M.D. and underwent Radiation. For 6 years Raegan remained Cancer Free and lead a very active life. Back in March during a routine follow-up MRI two different spots were found. Raegan was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (Bone Cancer grade 2)of the skull as a result of the radiation treatments she had received when she was 3. As a part of Raegan’s treatment plan she had to complete chemotherapy and undergo surgery for the best chance at cure. After speaking to numerous doctors at John Hopkins, they insisted because of the tumors location they would have to remove Raegan’s eye. Raegan’s mother didn’t accept this as the final answer, she reached out to Raegan’s radiation oncologist and she recommend a doctor in New York for a second opinion. The doctors in New York it was determined the surgery could be done without removing her eye. After a 11 hour brain surgery and two week stay in New York the tumor was removed. Raegan continued chemo therapy after the surgery. During this time she cannot attend school and must be home schooled. Raegan's mother has not been able to work as she has been with her. Her father continues to work as much as he can. Raegan has completed treatment and now has to be seen for follow up scans every three months. Raegan has 2 sisters ages 5 and 6.
