Tyler experienced a right knee injury early last year that would not heal enough for soccer (his favorite sport). Upon X-ray analysis, a 'growth' was observed in his femur and an MRI was scheduled. The radiologist confirmed an obliterating bone tumor. The family decision was reached to seek further diagnosis and treatment at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In May 2016, Tyler was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, at a type of bone cancer. After 10 weeks of chemotherapy, a limb-sparing surgery was successfully performed. While receiving post-surgery chemotherapy, It was discovered cancer had also spread to his lungs. Tyler endured two more surgeries - removing several tumors. Afterward, a new chemo regimen was established which he began. In December 2016, after only two months of the new treatment, lung CT scans indicated a recurrence and progression of the lung metastases. In spite of this news, Tyler is more dedicated than ever to take charge of his life and to begin healing. His treatment interests now lay in emerging therapies made possible by research efforts.
