My Story
Ava struggled with food allergies, eczema, and allergies most of her life before her cancer diagnosis. Even the most minute traces of her allergens would send her into anaphylactic shock. So it came as a complete shock when, at the age of five, Ava was diagnosed with a rare type of leukemia (Biphenotypic Leukemia). The doctor said it was like "being struck by lightening twice."
Since that awful day in February of 2014, Ava has fought valiantly for her life. In November of 2014 she had a life-saving transplant. Unfortunately, a year later, she relapsed. Currently, she is using an investigational drug to see if it will help her reach remission for a second transplant.
Although life has not been easy for her, Ava has always exuded supernatural grace and joy even in the face of so much heartache. We have been so blessed to be her parents for the past 8 years. But we want more. We will never stop fighting for more.
