My Story

Matthew was not quite 3 years old when we noticed bruising on his arms and legs. All of my nieces & nephews his age always had bruises, so his mother and I weren’t overly concerned with them at the beginning. About 2 weeks after we noticed the bruising, we also started seeing more blood when he was brushing his teeth and he would wake up in the morning with blood around his mouth (where his Binky was.) One afternoon he was especially pale and had a fever of 103 degrees…so we took him to his pediatrician. They did a blood test and quickly determined that he had leukemia…so we rushed him to Kosair Children’s Hospital. When they admitted him, they were surprised he was even conscious because he had VERY low white, red & platelet counts. He stayed at Kosair for the next 30 days, received roughly 15 blood transfusions and began his treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (A.L.L). After countless hospital stays, chemo, blood transfusions and clinic visits over the past 3 and a half years, I am very pleased to report that Matthew is finished with his treatment and is going well.
