My Story
On February 1st, 2013, Annabella Munoz was diagnosed with Stage 4 Intermediate non-MYCN amplified Neuroblastoma. At diagnosis Bella had a grapefruit sized tumor in her abdomen, golf ball sized tumor in her pelvis, and disease in the bone marrow of her left femur. We began treatment at Albany Medical Center. Bella endured countless scans (CT, MRI, MIBG), blood draws, and blood transfusions. Bella had a total of 8 rounds of chemotherapy. After Bella's 6th round. we traveled to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for tumor resection. Bella's resection lasted a total of 7 hours where the surgeon removed the tumors in her abdomen, pelvis, left adrenal gland, and countless lymph nodes. The surgery left Bella on complete life support in ICU for 4 days. She spent another 10 days in regular recovery. We then traveled back home where Bella received her last two rounds of chemotherapy. After her last two rounds of chemo, Bella was declared NED(no evidence of disease) on August 15th, 2013. Because there is such a high re-occurrence rate for Neuroblastoma, Bella will need to be scanned regularly. Bella will continue to scan every 3 months for the first two years, and every 6 months for the 3 years to follow. One of the chemotherapy drugs Bella received during treatment, Doxorubicin is known to cause heart problems. For this reason, Bella will need to be seen by a cardiologist for many years to follow.
