When Benny was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma just a few weeks before Christmas in 2013, we thought our world was ending. Knowing that this rapidly growing cancer was multiplying inside my precious child's body was beyond frightening. We had to act fast. Benny underwent five aggressive cycles of inpatient chemotherapy. We were so blessed that the cancer immediately responded favorably to the chemo. In between cycles, Benny was rehospitalized several times to manage crippling side effects and infections. In all Benny was hospitalized for 54 days. We are thrilled to say that our Benny is in remission. We will monitor him closely through scans and frequent blood count checks. As long as he remains cancer-free for the next 3-5 years, we will be able to change his status to "cured." Throughout this experience we made a choice to count our blessings and try and focus on the silver linings. Our wonderful friends, school and family made all the difference in the world. All of their positive words and encouraging sentiments carried us through a most difficult journey. We continue to think about, and pray daily for the many children whose cancer has not responded as favorably to treatment as Benny's did. We hold them in our hearts, and feel confident that someday there will be a cure.
