My Story

Our wonderful son, Jack Stanley Podkaminer, passed away 12 days before his 3rd birthday after a 10-month fight against Rhabdomyosarcoma. Jack was diagnosed in late April 2013 and was incredibly brave and tough through his treatment. Chemotherapy started on April 25, 2013 at Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital here in Syracuse, NY and we spent approximately 70-days in Boston for chemotherapy and proton radiation treatment at Mass General while staying at Christopher's Haven. Jack had excellent scans in September 2013 after we finished his proton radiation treatment, but we found out on December 17th that his cancer had relapsed in the primary site and metastasized to his brain. We wanted to continue to fight and tried some alternative chemotherapy protocols, but were unable to stop this beast. Jack passed away in our arms, and surrounded by family and friends, here in Syracuse on February 6th, 2014. We are very appreciative for the support from our family, friends, the entire Syracuse community, Christopher's Haven in Boston, and all the members of the medical team from Syracuse to Boston that helped us fight on Jack's behalf. I've never experienced such depths of sadness that I have now by losing our Jack. Jack was nothing short of absolutely wonderful. He died much too young. His spirit will be forever held closely in our hearts. I was always proud to be Jack's Dad. We miss you so much and love you tremendously Jack! Love, Mom and Dad
