My Story

This page is to honor our beautiful son who bravely and courageously fought Stage 4 MYCN amplified Neuroblastoma. RJ was diagnosed with cancer at the tender age of 19 months old and fought his battle until he succumbed to the nasty dreaded neuroblastoma on February 22nd 2012 at 26 months old. RJ was a bright and playful beautiful boy with a spirit that was unbreakable! No matter his struggles he was always smiling and had so much love to give! RJ was diagnosed on 08/11/11 at Janet Weis Childrens hospital in Danville PA. with Stage 4 NB. His 1st cycle of chemotherapy was started on 08/18/11. RJ was hospitalized for 22 days, this was the days that would forever change our lives. We returned home and relocated to our home hospital Golisano's Children's in Rochester NY where he would undergo 4 more cycles of chemo and with every cycle he would be so brave and strong. Smiling and playing running around the playrooms and up and down hallways.....you would have never know except for the bald little head and the battle scars that he wore from surgery that he had cancer. We then transferred to MSKCC where RJ would have more chemo and surgery to remove his primary tumor, followed by chemo, radiation and antibody therapy. Unfortunately our son would not get that far. RJ had surgery, the doctors removed his tumor but he would never fully recover as the surgery left a fistula in his stomach and caused massive infection, the cancer grew rapidly in his body and made him ineligible for anymore treatment. On February 8 2012 we were told that there was nothing else that the doctors could do and that RJ was being sent home on hospice care for the rest of his tiny life here with us. We left NYC on Feb. 9th 2012 returned to the hospital closest to home where he would spend 7 of his last 13 days with us. On Feb. 16th RJ got to come home, our home for the very last time....we spent the next 6 days every moment by his side as we watched our little boy slip away more and more each day.....On Feb. 22nd 2012 at 10:15 pm RJ would take his very last breath surrounded by all of his family that love him so much and wold give anything to have him back healthy again!!!! RJ was the true meaning of life, spirit, love, and HOPE!
