My Story
Esmeralda is currently undergoing treatment, which includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, and blood transfusions. The family does not have health insurance. If you can make a donation, please do so at: http://www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/help-esmeralda-ortiz-and-family-/141405
It all started in the beginning of February 2014 when Esmeralda Ortiz was having stomach problems. Her mother and father took her to Rady's Children's Hospital in San Diego, California. Unable to find anything the doctors sent her home. Two weeks later her mother and father took her to a hospital in Tijuana, Mexico. Unable to find anything either the doctors sent her home.
It was the week of February 17th, that her mother took her back to Rady's and insisted something was wrong. She was admitted and after looking into the problem deeper the doctor's determined that she had a mass in her small intestine and cancer in the liver, kidneys and esophagus.
It turns out the disease she has is adrenocortical carcinoma (i.e., adrenocortical cancer or adrenal cortex). A rare cancer that forms in the outer layer of tissue of the adrenal gland, which is responsible for making steroid hormones, adrenaline, and noradrenaline to control heart rate, blood pressure, and other body functions.
