My Story

Nicholas has an amazing strength and spirit. He never complains during an extremely difficult journey through chemo (15 months), radiation (28 days with chemo), surgery, and many complications from the surgery. He is now getting ready to begin more chemo. When he had his surgery in Nov. to remove his tumor, which was in his chest and abdomen, he developed an esophageal perforation and went into septic shock. He now has a diversion where his esophagus comes out near his collarbone and anything he swallows goes into a drainage bag. He gets nutrition through his g-tube in his stomach. He spent 49 days in the PICU at NY Presbyterian Hospital. That is where we met Barbara and Uno - they came to visit us every week. He will eventually be able to have another surgery to reverse this condition. He is currently receiving treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering in NY and CT Children's Hospital. He enjoys playing video games, Star Wars, watching movies and spending time at home away from hospitals. He has a tutor and is in 4th grade, but can't attend school right now. He does get on a webcam and join his class when he can. Since of Aug. of 2005 our family has been fighting Nicholas' cancer very aggresively - that has become our life.
