Darian Lee
Darian Lee Hatfield was born on July 16, 1997. She was a beautiful, spirited little girl. Darian was just starting to run trying to keep up with her 3 older brothers when I found a lump on the side of her neck the first week after the New Year in 1999. After taking her to her primary physician and a specialist, it was confirmed that the lump I found was cancer. She was diagnosed with neuroblastoma and began treatment at Riley’s Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. Unfortunately, before chemo could be started, the tumor had wrapped itself around her spinal cord and she lost the ability to walk and would cause more problems in the months ahead. After three (3) months of treatment, the doctors realized the tumor was still growing and was not affected by the chemo. So, she went through a few radiation treatments and the doctors changed her protocol to an experimental chemo that was stronger than what she had been given initially. In the summer of 1999, Darian went through the process to prepare for stem cell transplant, however, a month after she had surgery to remove the tumor, the tumor came back. It tripled in size and metastasized to her liver and lungs. My little girl lost her battle with cancer on September 17, 1999. Darian, you were truly a blessing to us and we miss you tremendously.
