Matthew is a wonderful little spirit who is full of zest, zeal and determination. After many months of intermittent, but excrutiating leg pains, he was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma at 6 years old.
At one point we were told they may have to amputate his leg depending on the severity of the tumor. Luckily, he was diagnosed just in time, and the tumor cells had not spread into the growth plate area near his right hip and pelvis. His Orthopaedic-Oncology specialist was able to save his right leg with a successful limb salvage operation. His right femur, from growth plate to growth plate, was removed and replaced with a cadaver bone, titanium rod and three screws.
He spent 29 weeks to the day in a hip spica-body cast and never complained once.
He used to be just a carefree child who loved to play baseball, act, swim, and garden. Over the last year he has had to face many obstacles. Learning to walk again, living with long term side effects from treatment. But his happy and determined spirit was not changed a bit; as he tells me now "Nothing is actually an obstacle anymore. I am invincible. I am super human. Or did you forget?"
