My Story
My name is John Shapiro and I began my courageous battle when I was 2 1/2 years old. I was diagnosed with a brain tumor, an ependymoma. I had surgery at CHOP and the entire tumor was removed. I then received radiation at Mass. General to take care of microscopic cells. I was doing great until I had a routine MRI, which showed another large tumor in a different area. The tumor metastasized, which is rare. I had surgery again but there was a spot that the surgeon couldn't get. After that, I've had lots of radiation and chemo and I handle it all like a champ! I have lots of friends all the hospitals I go to! My favorite thing to do is go to Kindergarten at Saint Helena School and help in the office. This January, I turned 6! People say I'm a superhero because I help people, but I'm just doing my job!
