The story begins on May 9th, Mother's Day, when my wife took Jocelyn to the St. Louis Children's Emergency Department because of an enlarged abdomen. At the time her symptoms were that of reflux and constipation. Little did we know that Jocelyn's right kidney was encompassed by a tumor that just two days later would be removed. After the surgery we waited while many different cancer diagnoses were tossed around until the final pathology came back and our baby daughter was diagnosed with Congenital Mesoblastic Nephroma (CMN). CMN makes up about 5% of pediatric kideny tumors. Fortunately the margins were clear and we have been getting monthly ultasounds to monitor the tunor bed for reoccurrence.
Those monthly scans detected a "spot" on Jo's left lung in November. The initial hypothesis was another rare form of cancer called pleuralpulmonary blastoma (PPB) that is linked to pediatric renal tumors. So in December Jocelyn's second major surgery before the age of 1 was performed to remove the "spot". Thankfully the biopsy was clear so we are still in the monitoring phase.
Jocelyn is now 11 months old and enjoys playing with her 2 yr old brother Jayden and her puppy Nixon. She is full of life and everyday is a new adventure.
