Casey had the type of personality that everyone was drawn to. He always had a smile on his face and his laugh was contagious. He never let his cancer slow him down and fought hard until the end. He was and always will be my hero.
Two weeks after Casey's first birthday, he was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on June 29, 2008. The chemo was tough, but like everything, he handled it with strength and a smile. In October 2009, after a routine blood draw, we found out the cancer had returned. Going from a 90% cure rate at diagnosis to about 30% after relapse, we were left with limited options.
After receiving chemo and full body radiation, Casey received and unrelated umbilical cord transplant December 2009. He spent two months in the hospital and was finally able to go home in February. His body was recovering very well. After a routine bone marrow aspiration 100 days post transplant, we found out the cancer had returned once again. Left with even fewer options (none of which would be a cure for him), we decided to spend what precious time we had left with him. Casey passed away peacefully the early morning of May 25, 2010.
