Kevin is my super hero! He was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma when he was 3 years/4 months old. He presented with back pain which turned out to be a tumor on his right adrenal gland. He underwent 7 rounds of chemo, surgery, bone marrow transplant, radiation, accutane and "mouse vitamins" over 18 months. He lost his high frequency hearing as a side effect of one of the chemos he received. He currently sports red hearing aids with glow in the dark ear molds (he's already had Spiderman, Iron Man and Flash molds). The mouse vitamins were a clinical trial for CH14.18 antibodies - since then this treatment has been added to the COG (Children's Oncology Group) protocol for treating neuroblastoma. Continued funding for research is needed so more break throughs in treatment can be made.
Kevin will be starting 2nd grade this fall. He is very smart and charming. He is a very happy boy - amazing with all the horrible treatments he went through. It fills my heart with joy whenever I see him skipping around with a huge smile on his face. After his bone marrow transplant, he could not climb the stairs without help. Today he continues to improve his swimming technique and endurance and will be playing soccer again this fall. I knew he was on the way to recovery when he and his older sister started pesking each other while they were playing.
Kevin is my hero for who he has become after all he has endured. Those who support childhood cancer research are remarkable as well!
