Around the beginning of December, her family noticed something was very different about Avery. She had a fever and was just not acting herself. Avery's first few doctors visits blamed the fevers on things like teething or a virus. Avery stopped walking and seemed to be having pain in her legs whenever her parents went to pick her up or hold her. Unsatisfied with the doctors suggestions, Avery's parents took her to their local ER. Here, blood work was done and Avery was transferred to Tulane Hospital for Children for further work up and care.
Avery was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on January 8, 2010. Avery was hospitalized for about a month to receive her induction chemotherapy and is currently out of the hospital and doing great. She and her family continue to visit the clinic about 3 times a week to get chemo and blood work. Avery is back to her bright eyed and fun loving little self. She is always dressed to impress, with at least 1 baby doll in hand!
As of February 12th, Avery is in remission and has been classified as "low risk".
