My Story
Wednesday May 10th 2006 was just another Wednesday to most people. Not to me and my family, it was the day that changed everything in our life in one simple word… CANCER. I heard the word…but it wasn’t me….my mother….or even my grandmother they were talking about. It was my 2 year old son, Connor. They could have stopped talking at that point… Because I don’t remember a word they said after that.
Connor was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia just 2 weeks after his second birthday. We were living in Alaska at the time and within hours of hearing “your child has cancer” we were medevac’d from Anchorage to Seattle and spent the next 364 days at the Ronald McDonald House receiving treatment and eventually a bone marrow transplant.
Cancer never stood a chance against Connor. He made cancer the victim, not himself. Even during the darkest moments of treatment, Connor had nothing but a smile on his face, with an amazing spirit that made everyone hopeful for him.
In May of 2007 we were finally able to go back to Alaska. Connor was just starting to regrow hair, had the chubby cheeks from the steroids he was still taking and a central line still in place, but was still an active 3 year old who was excited to be back home.
In May of 2014, Connor will reach the 8 year anniversary of his diagnosis. Connor is my hero and continues to be an inspiration to many that NO ONE should ever give up the fight!
