My Story

Bretton was born in October of 2005. During the pregnancy we were not aware that he had Down Syndrome. We found out the day he was born, but immediately fell in love with him and welcomed him into our lives. We knew there would be certain developmental challenges and health risks associated with his diagnosis. What we didn't expect was that shortly after his first birthday he would become very ill and diagnosed with leukemia. The next year was a whirlwind of chemotherapy and all the complications that come along with the treatments. In addition, Bretton had surgery to bypass a duodenal narrowing and multiple surgeries to dilate his airway due to congenital narrowings. Luckily he did not have any cardiac issues. Bretton is now 3-1/2 years old and is attending early childhood classes. He is a happy, beautiful child who just learned to walk and is starting to say many words. He loves music and books. His favorite character is Elmo from Sesame Street. We are so thankful to see him healthy and happy and out of the hospital and home with all of us.
