My Story

Originally diagnosed with pre-B cell lymphoblastic lymphoma of his iliac crest and spine in August 2004. Bone biopsy confirmed small round blue cell tumor. His condition remained stable through the next 2 years of treatment and he completed his scheduled course of chemotherapy on 8/13/2006. Luke's platelet count dropped in Nov 2006 but a bone marrow aspirate was negative for any evidence of leukemia. March 2007 he began to have intermittent lower back pain. A wedge bone biopsies with marrow aspirates showed sheets of blasts diagnostic for pre-B lymphocytic leukemia. He commenced relapse chemotherapy a bone marrow confirmed remission. Given his early recurrence he was at high risk and he underwent a unrelated bone marrow transplantation at Dana-Farber / Boston Children's Hospital in August 2007. His BMT had minimal complications On 3/3/2008 (DAY +241) he underwent a bone marrow aspirate/ biopsy and lumbar puncture for back pain and drop in blood counts which confirmed ALL relapse. A bone marrow exam in April 2008 revealed refractory ALL. Against all the odds Luke was in remission again in Aug 2008. He started high school and is having a high quality of life--even with weekly chemotherapy.
