My Story

Our beloved daughter, Emily, was welcomed into heaven's paradise on January 1, 2009, following a long hospitalization. Emily's journey with cancer began when she was 4-years-old. She endured 6 months of inpatient chemo and showed everyone that although she had cancer...it NEVER had her! Everyday was a day to celebrate, appreciate and have as much fun as possible! We had 3 1/2 beautiful years of remission before Emily's cancer returned. Emily bravely returned for more chemo, biopsies, and radiation in preparation for a bone marrow transplant. Shortly after her BMT, Emily began to have complications of Graft vs. Host Disease. Emily's life was cut short when all attempts to control her GVHD failed. Emily was with us for only 8 short years, but in that time she demonstrated the true meaning of love, kindness and strength. Emily had beautiful blue eyes, a kind and generous heart, a thoughtful and fun-loving nature, and a smile that will be remembered forever. She found delight in the smallest things and noticed everything. She was a constant warrior. She is our hero. Throughout Emily's long battle with leukemia, she never once complained, she taught us more about life than anyone we have ever met. Emily's illness weakened her body but never weakened her spirit. Her courage reminded us that everyday is a celebration! Each moment with Emily was a gift. Emily was in the third grade at Roosevelt Elementary in Plover, WI. She loved everything about school! She loved being a girl scout and was a member of St. Pauls United Methodist Church in Stevens Point, where she sang in the Cherub Choir. She loved animals, Chinese food, squash, playing outside and going on bug hunts. During the summer, she enjoyed swimming and fishing and in the winter she was an expert snow fort builder. She loved to sing and dance and couldn't wait to paint her bedroom dark pink. Emily's favorite sound was of crickets chirping. She adored splashing in puddles during the rain, cuddling with her pets and listening to her sister, Megan, read to her as she drifted off to sleep. Although we feel that our hearts are breaking and we can't imagine a life without Emily in it, we are blessed by all that she has taught us. Being Emily's parents has been a privilege and an honor. Emily's bravery and passion for life will never be forgotten! We love you Emily!!! Until there is a cure ~ Peace, Hope, Love
