My Story

Erasmo "Mito" Santos is a 12 year old boy who comes to us all the way from Honduras. He went into renal failure three years ago and was lucky to receive a renal transplant. He was then exposed to Epstein Barr Virus and due to his immunocomprimized state he developed a condition known as Post Tranplant Lymphoproliferative Disease, a form of aggressive Lymphoma. He started chemotherapy and despite our initial efforts, his tumor grew. So, his chemotherapy was intensified and we were able to kill the large tumor in his belly. Throughout this he battled other complications such as tumor lysis syndrome and bacterial blood infections. But, he perservered and triumphed a difficult course and was able to return to Honduras tumor free. He stayed with us at Tulane during Gustav and was our own TV star appearing on CNN praising his medical team, when really he deserves the praise for his brave and triumphant battle with lymphoma. The Make A Wish Foundation was able to grant Mito his wish, which was to play in the snow with his family! Mito and his family have just returned from their trip to Colorado and they had a great time. Mito continues to be an inspiration to all of the medical staff at Tulane and we wish him and his family good luck and good health!
