Spencer was diagnosed with leukemia when he was four. We made two deals in the hospital. One was that I would shave my head when Spencer's hair started falling out. The other is that we would raise money to fight cancer. That first year, we raised over $32,000 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Since then we have raised over $5000 for various cancer charities each year.
Spencer has reminded us continually that his cancer is an obstacle to living life, but that life goes on regardless. During his treatment, when his immune system was weak, we would go hiking in nearby state parks to stay away from people. To celebrate his first diagnosis anniversary, we rode 45 miles on our bicycles. To celebrate his second diagnosis anniversary, we climbed a mountain to find a geocache where we left a collection of cancer fighting wrist bands (Give blood, Komen, LIVESTRONG, Team in Training, Dana Farber).
He completed treatment in December, 2007, and will have his bone marrow and spinal fluid tested the week after St. Baldrick's. If all goes well, this will be his last bone marrow aspiration and spinal tap.
Spencer is also shaving his head for St. Baldrick's this year. It is his third year in a row. His donation page is at:
