My name is Luciana and I am 8 years old. One night, I woke up with pain in my left side and was taken to the ER for testing. After the testing, they found a mass on my left kidney and I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Wilms Tumor Kidney Cancer in November 2022. I had surgery to remove both my tumor and my kidney. I started chemo treatment in December and by January I started to lose my hair and had to shave my dead. It made me sad and the medicine made me sick. After 4 months, my treatment was done and was able to ring the bell. In July, I went for my routine 3 month scans. I got super upset when my mom and dad told me that a tumor grew back and it also spread to my lungs. I had to go in for surgery to get the tumor in my belly removed and once again start treatment. This time was a little bit different and I was scared. The treatment was 1o months long and it now involved chemo and radiation. I wasn't able to start school with my friends and placed on home instruction. I spent a majority of my time in the hospital or clinic. I got sick more frequently, counts would drop, treatments would have to be delayed and was in and out of the hospital more often. Along the way, I met some friends which helped me through this journey. They understood how I felt and what I was going through. I built a better relationship with my nurses, my child life specialist, and art therapists. I even met a therapy dog, Primo, who visited the hospital ! After 10 months, I was able to ring the bell in June ! I am now in remission and was able to start 3rd grade in person with all my friends! I am cheering and going to start dance.
