My Story

A Wonder Woman’s theme birthday party was planned to celebrate Danielle’s 7 birthday party. The week before that, she had her 7th physical scheduled. Danielle had been sick for a few months. They had done X-rays, MRIs, and all they found was that her spine had a few fractures in it and she needed a brace. I had been trying to explain in so many ways that I knew there was something else, but her Dr always said “her symptoms were normal”. My husband and I met up at her appointment and I was determined to not move until they drew some blood tests! Her Dr still refused to do labs but I said “I’m not moving until this is done” she checked her hemoglobin at the office, the nurse was so shocked it was so low, she pricked her other finger, and it came back the same. She said “I have to go get the Dr”. Her Dr walked out of the other physical she was doing, came back in and said “Danielle needs labs, but you can go tomorrow morning”. We ran out of the office with only a few minutes to spare to get to the lab on time. They drew her STAT labs. That night around 9pm her Dr called me and said Danielle could have 3 things. One of them being Leukemia. The Dr had already contacted a Hem/Onc at CHLA and told us we would receive a call the next day in the morning. The next morning Danielle’s symptoms worsened, she lost all ability to walk, and she was in immense pain. I had to call the on call physician at CHLA and advocate for her because it was already noon and no call was received. He told me her condition had not been fully briefed to him because he would have had us go in that same night her PCP called us. Well we went to CHLA and shortly that night we learned she had ALL. Her 7th birthday party was cancelled, and she had to celebrate with multiple IVs and blood transfusions. But we received the best care at CHLA. We basically lived at CHLA for the next 3 years. Danielle is now 14, going on 15. 5 years cancer free! She is a cancer survivor! Our Wonder Woman she became.
