My Story

Madison was diagnosed with stage IV Wilms tumor in February of 2022 shortly after her 2nd birthday. We took her to the ED after a few days of UTI symptoms and then noticing a bump sticking out of her stomach. The initial CT scan at diagnosis showed she had 1 large kidney tumor and innumerable (more than 50) pulmonary nodules. That first hospital stay included a 12 day stint in the PICU and surgery to perform the tumor resection, nephrectomy, and port placement. She received her first two doses of chemotherapy while still inpatient a week after her surgery. Her treatment plan then consisted of a 31 week chemotherapy protocol - that was a mix of inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy - along with 8 days of full lung radiation. Madison had the most positive attitude and laughed, danced, played, and kept us all smiling throughout the ups and downs of her treatment. She loves all her nurse friends and the hospital buddies she met along the journey. She completed treatment in October of 2022 and got to ring the end of treatment bell shortly after that! She still has scans every 3 months to check for any new growths or reoccurrence, but we are almost a year and a half out of treatment and are so grateful to say that she is currently in remission. She is now an incredibly active 4 year old who loves preschool, all things Disney, arts and crafts, and gymnastics.
