My Story

Ezra is a very sweet, smart, and athletic 7 year old that began to have what seemed to be random vomiting events around Labor Day 2023. There wasn’t a fever or lingering affects so the expectation was food or allergy related, but no commonality could be identified. On October 5th, Ezra vomited at school for the first time and Leslie took him to our amazing pediatrician, who tied headaches and the vomiting to a brain concern and scheduled and MRI for Tuesday October 10th, which was also our daughter Hazel’s 11th birthday. Within an hour of the completion of the MRI, we were in an ambulance to Children’s Hospital downtown and meeting with Neurosurgeon and Oncology teams looking at the images showing a walnut sized tumor at the base of the brain between the brain stem and cerebellum. A few hours later, Ezra was in surgery to place a pressure relief shunt in this brain to stabilize the pressure for a more in depth MRI the next day and through the now planned removal surgery. The next MRI also included the spine and did not indicate any spread to the spinal column, which was a major relief that improved treatment options. It also mapped out the surgical removal planning and provided a narrowing of the field of tumor types that it could be. A few days later he had the tumor removed in a very long surgery day. They removed all of the tumor and we were cleared to start the his cancer treatments.  He had 35 continuous days of radiation. He rang his radiation bell on December 26. After a month of a break, we started his chemotherapy cycles. There are 9 cycles total ranging from 4-6 weeks. We are on track to finish chemo on December 23, 2024.  Ezra has two sisters- Adele 13 and Hazel 11 that are also on this journey with us.  Thank you for supporting me and the more than 300,000 kids worldwide who will be diagnosed with cancer this year. By sharing the gifts of your time, talent and money with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, you're supporting research to give all kids with cancer a better chance for a cure.
