It wasn’t soon after Brix started Kindergarten that his mom, Ashley started noticing some unusual bruising that led her to request lab work done on him. Ashley thought forsure that he maybe anemic, the thought of him having cancer never crossed her mind, he seemed so active and healthy. On October 5th, 2022 The Wood Family’s world came crashing down when they received the news that no parent ever wants to receive, Brix was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia(AML). He would spend the next 6 months in the hospital at Dell Children’s in Austin, Texas where he would receive multiple rounds of high dose chemotherapy. He received multiple blood and platelet transfusions. He battled multiple infections since his little body was neutropenic for so long in between his chemo treatments, he had multiple surgeries for intrathecal chemo and spinal taps. Instead of playing sports and at school with his friends, Brix was now living in a hospital room fighting for his life. They spent every holiday and birthday in the hospital with Brix fighting cancer, their world was so full of unknowns of what the future might have in store for Brixton and their family and they were so scared. Brixton’s older sister Brielle who was 9 years old struggled with panic and anxiety attacks from watching her younger brother fight cancer. She was use to seeing her mom and brother everyday at home to now visiting with them at a hospital watching her little brother fight for his life. Cancer completely shattered their family, and all they could do at this point was to pray to God that he would heal Brix and they would get to watch him be a kid and play sports again. After 198 days of fighting cancer, on April 21st, 2023 on Acute Myeloid Leukemia(AML) awareness day Brix ran through those hospital halls and rang his bell!! He was officially done with treatment and in remission! Brix was going HOME for good! Brix is now 7 years old, he is so resilient, funny, kind, determined and has such a big love for sports especially football and the Cincinnati Bengals. Brix has officially been cancer free for 7 months now and he started back to school in the Fall. He is back to playing flag football and being a kid again, something that his mom Ashley thought she might not ever see again. The Wood Family’s prayers have officially been answered and Brix is cancer free!! They are so incredibly blessed to now be on this side of treatment, unfortunately his battle isn’t over yet, he has to manage the side effects from treatment as well as he has multiple doctor appts from oncology to cardiology to make sure his body continues to stay healthy and cancer free! #TeamBrix #tacklechildhoodcancer
